Abstract: The first step in living with lung disease means learning about lung disease. Hawaii

Activity title: COPD Education Day 2009: Environmental Factors & COPD

Abstract: The Hawaii COPD Coalition is sponsoring its 3rd Annual COPD Education Day on November 7, 2009 in Honolulu. The presentation will focus on COPD in Hawaii, exercise, nutrition, medication, travel (including flying with oxygen) and the flu. All are welcome including patients and healthcare professionals. This event is a component of the Coalition's, Project SUCCESS (Spirometry-Urged Cessation through Counseling, Education and Sustained Support). In addition to the Education Day event, the Coalition continues to offer its monthly in-store lung testing program through September, 2009 (visit www.hawaiicopd.org for locations and dates).

Major partners organizing this event include CVS Caremark/Longs Drugs, Queen's Medical Center, the Hawaii State Department of Health's Tobacco Prevention & Education Program, Kaiser Permanente, the Coalition for Tobacco Free Hawaii and many other community partners.

The event will feature exhibits, speakers, free demonstrations, free blood pressure and breathing testing, resources and handouts. Lunch and beverages will be provided. Activity title: Breath of Life Club

Abstract: For over 30 years, the Breath of Life Club has met at St. Mary's Hospital in Decatur, Illinois for 9 months of the year. This year, it meets at 12:00 pm on the third Tuesday of each month in room 4011. This COPD support group meets over lunch (provided) with a different topic each month. Facilitated by Cheryl Shipley, RRT, the meeting ends with a question and answer session with the speaker, and support personnel (respiratory therapists and pulmonary nurses attend each session and are available for individual Q&A).

Flu and pneumococcal vaccinations will be administered (Bring your insurance card). Two pulmonary nurses will be available to answer general and specific questions about COPD. Assistance with understanding and filling out living wills and healthcare power of attorney documents will be provided. An expert in Medicare Part D will be available to answer questions, pharmacy technicians will help participants manage their medications, an oxygen tent will be on-site (Participants on Home O2 will be able to exchange tanks with a copy of their prescription), Catholic Charities (provides funding for medication) will have a booth also. There will be educational mini-lectures on: nutrition and COPD (given by a registered dietitian); necessary evils: tests used to diagnose and evaluate COPD (given by a physician); understanding Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (given by a physician); living wills and health care power of attorneys (given by St. Mary's Hospital's experts); home exercises (given by a physical therapist); smoking cessation (given by a registered nurse); understanding oxygen: use, in travel and Medicare payment for will be addressed as three separate components. Abstract: To help increase awareness of COPD, Battle Creek Health System is again offering a physician-led series, scheduled quarterly on Tuesday afternoons. The next program in this series, to be held on November 24, is titled 'Staying Well with Chronic Lung Disease.' Following the program there will be a short time for general questions and support. A pulmonary rehabilitation therapist will also be on hand to answer questions and give a short tour of the outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation center.

Activity title: Respiratory Rally 2009

Abstract: The American Lung Association in Minnesota's 4th Annual Respiratory Rally is a one-day conference for individuals affected by lung disease, their families, caregivers, friends or anyone interested in learning more about lung disease. The day is full of networking and education, and provides people with lung disease the opportunity to connect with companies that have respiratory products. The event includes a morning coffee break and a healthy lunch.

Mike McBride, the kick-off speaker, will motivate everyone as he shares his experience as the first person with COPD to complete the Boston Marathon.
