Asthma Clinical Research Network: Measuring Inhaled Corticosteroid Efficacy (ACRN: MICE)

Objectives:

The purpose of this study was to compare the relative benficial and systemic effects in a dose-response relationship for 2 ICSs.

Background:

A clinical model is needed to compare inhaled corticosteriods (ICS) with respect to efficacy.

Subjects:

30 asthmatic individuals 18 to 55 years of age. this was a feasibility study, not a comparative trial, therefore the sample size calcualtion was based on an appropriate sample size for extimating the common variance with som elevel of precision.

Conclusions:

High-dose ICS therapy did not significantly increase the efficacy of measures that were evaluated but it did increase the systemic effect measure, overnight cortisol secretion.
